The Senses

When I was a little girl in Russia, I thought books were a person’s most valuable possession. So before I set out for America in 1989, I packed them up and left instructions with my aunt to send them along when I put down roots. My New York mailman wasn’t happy delivering thirty boxes weighing ten pounds each.

Much has changed since then. I still have my books (and a career I love and US citizenship), but what I really treasure is being surrounded by the energy of friends, family, new people, tastes, sights, smells, and sounds. Life is a feast, and a feast is more delicious when two are at the table.

Emily Dickinson said, “Find ecstasy in life; the mere sense of living is joy enough.” I couldn’t agree more. There are so many ways for us to enjoy ourselves. I can imagine us walking along La Rambla in Barcelona buying fresh bread, cheese, and olives for a picnic in the park, then taking a “siesta” together before going in search of an authentic flamenco performance. If they’re giving lessons that night, you’ll be the first one up out of your chair and I’ll be right there with you. What matters to you is inhaling deep breaths of life every chance you get, not worrying about getting the steps perfect. Who cares if we look silly? You won’t forget the flower for my hair and I won’t laugh if you decide to wear those tight flamenco pants you bought for next halloween.

I love with my ears. You know how to carry a conversation, so listening to you will have an aphrodisiacal effect. Keeping me enrapt in your words counts for a lot more than how you look (although…please be someone who takes care of their health and appearance). I hope my next relationship will last forever. If you feel the same, you’ll agree how important it is for us to stimulate each other intellectually. Of course, that’s only part of what creates a lasting bond. I’ll let you use your imagination here. We can compare notes later. Commitment can only come from real chemistry.

So let’s share an experience on our first date. A museum or a walk in the park would be perfect. I want to see how you embrace the world around you. It will give me a better idea of how you might embrace me.

If you’re tempted to wink, please don’t. I’ve put time and energy into this and it would be nice if you do too.
